Crested Butte vs Gunnison, Where Should You Live?

If you’re thinking about moving to the Gunnison Valley, one of the biggest questions you may have is: Should I live in Crested Butte or Gunnison? While these two communities are connected by Highway 135 and are only about 30 miles apart, they offer very different day-to-day lifestyles. Crested Butte is known for its historic character, walkability, restaurants, shops, and close connection to mountain recreation, while Gunnison offers a larger, more spread-out community with many of the everyday amenities, services, and conveniences people look for when making a home.

There is also a significant difference when it comes to real estate and how you experience the valley. In Crested Butte, you are paying for more than just the property itself—you are also buying into the location, historic town setting, walkability, and proximity to recreation. Gunnison can offer a different range of housing options and a more practical, year-round community atmosphere. But choosing between the two isn’t simply about which town has the “better” home; it’s about what fits your lifestyle, priorities, budget, and how you want to spend your time here. I’ve covered these differences in much more detail in my latest video, where I compare Crested Butte and Gunnison and look at the lifestyle, real estate, convenience, weather, recreation, and more.
