Almont is where the tumbling waters of the Taylor and East rivers meet to form the Gunnison River. Originally named Fishers for the first settler in the area, Sam Fisher, the town was renamed in 1881 to Almont, after a famous racehorse known as the leading Hambletonian stallion of the century. During the mining days of Doctor’s Mine, Almont served as area camps for miners transporting silver ore via railroad to Gunnison. When mining ended and the railroad went bankrupt, the earlier settlers stayed to call Almont their permanent home. While it is a small town, Almont caters to those who appreciate a simpler, quieter place. Some say it is Colorado at its finest. Almont is a true sportsman’s paradise offering fishing, hiking, horseback riding, kayaking, hiking, snowmobiling, hunting, and rafting. Although Almont offers all these activities, it is best known for its world-class gold medal fly-fishing. Almont’s high canyon mountains, blue skies, and crystal clear trout-filled waters make it an incredible destination to visit or call home. The Gunnison National Forest is just out the back door and the town is conveniently located between Crested Butte and Almont. There are three fishing and outdoor recreation resorts within Almont- Harmels, Three Rivers, and the Almont Resort. All offering different amenities like fishing, horseback riding, and white water rafting. The Taylor Reservoir is a popular boating and fishing destination in the summer and Taylor Park is the gateway to the old mining town of Tincup. The most popular housing options are single-family homes dotted along Taylor Canyon Road, within the Homestead Subdivision, Almont Subdivision, Spring Creek area or Wilder on the Taylor. Historically, Almont doesn’t experience the quick turn over in sales like other areas in the valley as most properties are kept for many generations to enjoy.
