My Favorite Hikes

There’s something magical about hiking—the way the air feels fresher, your senses sharpen, and nature puts on its best show just for you. Whether you’re searching for wildflowers, craving solitude, or just want a scenic stroll to clear your head, hiking has a way of grounding us while keeping our spirits high. Living in Crested Butte, I’m lucky to have some of the most beautiful and accessible trails right in my backyard. Here are three of my all-time favorite hikes that showcase the best this mountain paradise has to offer.

Snodgrass Trail:

If you’re chasing wildflower glory and breathtaking views of Mt. Crested Butte, Snodgrass Trail delivers in spades. This moderate out-and-back or loop option weaves through lush aspen groves, rolling meadows, and sweeping alpine scenery. What I love most is how the trail gives you an instant reward—within just a few steps, you’re immersed in nature’s splendor.

Snodgrass is perfect in mid-to-late summer when the meadows burst into color. It’s also a favorite among mountain bikers, so be sure to share the trail with a smile. The trail is well-marked and offers both shaded forest sections and open ridgeline paths, making it ideal for hikers who want variety and visual interest. Don’t forget your camera—those views of Mt. CB are unforgettable!

Lower Loop:

When I want a relaxing hike that still offers postcard-worthy scenery, the Lower Loop is my go-to. Easy access from downtown Crested Butte, this trail feels like a local secret, despite its popularity. It follows the Slate River through meadows, past beaver ponds, and under the wide Colorado sky. It’s relatively flat, which makes it family- and dog-friendly—great for a casual day out.

The Lower Loop is especially charming in early summer when the river is high and the surrounding hillsides are green and alive. There are even optional offshoots if you want to make your hike longer, like heading toward Gunsight Bridge or connecting to the Upper Lower Loop. Whether you’re walking, trail running, or just out to take photos, this trail delivers peace, beauty, and a sense of belonging in nature.

Caves Trail in Crested Butte South:

Looking for a hike that adds a little mystery to your mountain adventure? The Caves Trail in Crested Butte South offers just that. It’s less trafficked than many others, which means you often have the trail to yourself—ideal for those who enjoy solitude and discovery. The hike climbs through forested terrain up to a ridge where large boulders and small caves give this trail its name.

It’s a moderately challenging hike with some elevation gain, but the reward is a unique and peaceful environment. The panoramic views from the top are totally worth the climb. This trail feels like a hidden gem, perfect for those days when you want something different from the typical alpine hike.

Each of these hikes—Snodgrass, Lower Loop, and the Caves Trail—offers something special, whether it’s the stunning views, ease of access, or quiet charm. What they all have in common is the ability to transport you, to remind you of nature’s rhythms, and to spark a little adventure in your day. I hope to see you out on the trails! So lace up your boots, pack a snack, and hit the trail. You might just find your new favorite hike, too.
