Almost completely surrounded by soaring mountain peaks and the wild beauty of the Gunnison National Forest, the town of Crested Butte is tucked away at 8,885 feet above sea level in the Colorado Rockies.  Once a center for coal-mining, Crested Butte has since become what locals proudly call “The Last Great Colorado Ski Town” and Crested Butte homes continuously attract attention not just from skiing enthusiasts but from all lovers of the great outdoors.

Crested Butte CO Homes

It’s hard not to fall in love with Crested Butte.  Unlike many other mountain ski towns, Crested Butte has retained its genuine small-town character and avoided overdevelopment, resulting in a warm, welcoming atmosphere and a refreshing down-home attitude.  A National Historic District, the town has preserved much of its 19th century buildings and taking a stroll in downtown Crested Butte is like walking through the main street of a Victorian village, complete with brightly painted false front buildings and antique streetlights.  In 2008, it was named one of the country’s “Dozen Distinctive Destinations” by the National Trust for Historic Preservation.

With its combination of small-town charm and rugged mountainous surroundings, it’s not surprising why Crested Butte homes have never really lacked for buyers.  No matter the time of year, Crested Butte is the kind of place that folks visit and end up never wanting to leave.
